About Cancún

Located on the northeast coast of the state of Quintana Roo in the east coast of Mexico and more than 1.700 km. away from the capital Mexico City. Cancun has the only airport in the Riviera Maya, meaning that all tourists going to Playa del Carmen and Tulum land here too.

Cancun was born in the minds of ambicious tourist planners who wished to build a touristic complex in the new Yucatan with a fame capable of shaming Acapulco in the 1970’s. The chosen location was a deserted strip of sand in front of the Puerto Juarez coast, on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It was called Cancun, which means “Serpents Nest” in Mayan. To the government of the local government, this was a huge investment in tourism. Huge amounts of money were spent to complete the project and make sure it could fit thousands of tourists.

Cancun is in reality 2 different cities:
The city center and the Hotel Zone. The City Center is built around Tulum Av, an avenue lined with trees, flanked by banks, malls and restaurants.

Cancun's Hotel Zone is where most visitors choose to stay, thanks to its world-famous white-sand beaches and crystal-clear Caribbean waters. The area's beachfront resorts line the coastline, offering direct access to some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico.

The main road running through the area is Kukulcan Boulevard, named after the feathered serpent deity of the Maya. On the opposite side lies the Nichupté Lagoon, a vast saltwater ecosystem home to fish, crocodiles, and native wildlife. Along the lagoon, visitors will find marinas, yacht rentals, shopping centers, restaurants, lagoon tours, and the Pok Ta Pok Golf Club, one of the best places in Cancun to enjoy a spectacular sunset.

This part of Cancun is also the center of the city's nightlife and entertainment scene. Plaza Forum is home to the famous Party Zone, while major shopping centers such as Plaza Kukulcan, Plaza La Isla, Plaza Caracol, and Plaza Forum offer everything from luxury brands to local boutiques. Popular landmarks include Hard Rock Cafe and Rainforest Cafe, while nightlife favorites such as Coco Bongo, La Boom, Dady Rock, and Dady'O continue to attract visitors looking for an unforgettable night out.

Shopping enthusiasts will find a wide variety of international and designer brands, making Cancun one of Mexico's top destinations for vacation shopping.

Dining options are equally diverse, ranging from casual eateries and family-friendly theme restaurants to excellent international cuisine. Visitors can enjoy Mexican, Italian, Argentine, Chinese, Japanese, and many other culinary traditions without ever leaving the area.
