About Isla Blanca
An excellent kite spot, ideal for taking kitesurfing lessons, it is a large strip of sand located only 25 minutes north of Cancun within a huge and shallow seawater lagoon. At this spot, you can kite with no risks, in shallow, calm waters. It is also conveniently located just 5 minutes from Playa Mujeres.
This is our home spot. Isla Blanca is located in a small peninsula with white sand beaches and pristine jungles, it is a secret corner and a great escape from the chaos of Cancun city.
Isla Blanca is the ideal place for “North Winds” since because of its location, north winds are on-shore when they are off-shore in the rest of the Riviera Maya. This is the perfect place to learn how to kitesurf also because of the water depth, which is practically at hip level all over the lagoon. In case you drift off or have any issues, you can just walk your kite back to shore.
Kiteboarding Conditions
The windy season is from November to May. The winds are consistent and may vary from south to north. From November to April, it is called the “Season of the Norths”, since the winds are affected by the cold fronts from the north coming from The United States and Canada. Winds coming from the north are strong (10-30kn) and the weather can get cold, which is why a neoprene suit of 4/3mm or 5/3 mm is recommended. As soon as the wind turns to the east and southeast –which is what usually happens- you no longer need a neoprene suit as the temperature rises. From April to May, the wind is always hot, with an average of 10-20 knt..
How To Get to Isla Blanca
Located just north of Cancun, Isla Blanca is one of the region's most popular destinations for kiteboarding, wingfoiling, and enjoying shallow turquoise waters.
By Car from Cancun
Take Bonampak Avenue north and continue straight after crossing Lopez Portillo Avenue. Follow the road until you reach the entrance to Playa Mujeres. At the first roundabout, take the road that circles Playa Mujeres, passing the golf course and residential areas. Continue to the second roundabout, where the road to Isla Blanca begins.
Follow this road as it transitions from pavement to a cobblestone surface and continue for several more kilometers. You'll pass the entrance to Pirata Morgan and eventually see access points to the lagoon on your left. To reach the areas with the best riding conditions, continue toward the end of the lagoon, where you may need to park and walk a short distance.
By Public Transportation
Public vans travel between Cancun and Isla Blanca several times a day. You can catch them near the intersection of Tulum Avenue and Lopez Portillo Avenue, in front of Farmacias del Ahorro, or near the ferry terminal for Isla Mujeres.
Departure times are typically around 7:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 4:00 PM, although schedules may change.
By Uber
Uber became available in Cancun in 2024 and can be a convenient option for reaching Isla Blanca directly from most areas of the city.
From Cancun International Airport
The easiest option is to take an ADO bus from the airport to downtown Cancun and then continue by taxi or Uber to Isla Blanca. Direct rideshare pickup availability at the airport may vary, so many visitors prefer the ADO bus as the most reliable option.
